What Happens to Your Digital Space When You Are Gone?

Today, most people have created a virtual world for themselves online. Well, the internet is here, and it is here to stay. It's a virtual world that helps you communicate with loved ones and friends, share your business ideas, and market your products and services, among other things. Sadly, death is here to stay as well, and it will certainly rob you of your virtual online planet. You need to think about your social media accounts and plan for their management when you are no longer alive. Companies offer many options regarding what happens to your accounts after your death. Here are some options that you can include in your will:

Choose a Legacy Contact

Some online virtual world companies allow you to select a legacy contact to take care of things in your virtual world when you are gone. In this way, your online account will be memorialised and used by friends and loved ones to share your memories. They can access your account to view what you posted for the public, but the information will not be available to other people who haven't connected to your account already. For instance, a stranger will not receive a notification asking him or her to check out your account. Additionally, there is no invitation for events like birthdays or business meetings, which would occur ordinarily if you were alive.

Since the account is managed by someone you trust as a legacy contact, they can post messages and pictures on your account or download and archive useful information for other purposes. However, legacy contacts cannot access your messages and other private things in your virtual world.

Account Executors

Unlike a legacy contact, some online service providers allow you to choose executors to continue running things upon your demise. You can choose as many as five executors. Ideally, executors are the best option for cases where you use the online account for a business with partners and stakeholders with equal rights and interests in a certain venture. It allows them to access the account for information deemed necessary for the continuity of the business. Once that has been retrieved, they can terminate the account.

Inactive Account Control

An inactive account control deactivates the account after a certain period of inactivity. For instance, if you do not sign in for some months, then the account becomes automatically inactive.

As you plan for your physical assets and money, keep your virtual world in mind as well. It is an important part of your life that needs to be adequately protected upon your demise.
